Swimming

Yesterday we had our first swim for this summer.  We were very excited about it.

At swimming, we are learning survival skills in the water.  We pretended that we had fallen out of a boat into very deep water and all we had was a piece of wood to hold on to (flutter boards).  Some of us tried lying on our tummies on top of the boards, some of us tried standing or sitting on the boards and some of us lay on our boards hugging the boards.  We soon found that lying on our backs was the easiest way to float without using lots of energy.  We could float for ages like this!

Writing to describe

In Ignite@Midnight we are learning to write to describe. We want our audience to get a picture in their head of the event we are describing.

Check out the piece of writing we wrote together as a class about Ngaire's niece swimming at the beach. Tell us what you think.

My little niece, Alexis, and I went to the sandy, Auckland beach on the weekend. Alexis loves the feel of the soft, golden sand between her toes and fingers.

As she ran down towards the water you could hear her delightful giggles from the anticipation of entering the water. Wavy water went everywhere as Alexis splashed about. After awhile she put her face right down and drank the salty water. Yuk! She didn’t mind though.

After a long time of swimming, Alexis was shivering from the cold and she waddled off out of the sea to get dry and warm again.

We are learning how to be a good buddy. First we had to sit down and talk about what a good buddy would do. Then Jocelyn asked us what a good buddy is. We came up with a whole lot of ideas! After that we had to pick one idea that we had. Then we had to do a brainstorm about the idea we picked. Now we are up to doing a poster or making a video to tell more about it. This report is written by Aroha and Tabitha

Put Up by Alex

This week we have been encouraging each other by giving put ups. Check out Alex's video showing what a put up is.

Have you heard or given a put up lately? How did it make you feel? Leave us a comment and let us know.

Hands-On Homework

This week is we are using 'Put Ups' not 'Put Downs'.  So, your hands on homework this week is to take a photo, draw a picture, make a model or show me in some other way how you would encourage someone and give them a 'put up'. This fits in really well with our value that we are focusing on this term - manaakitanga!

So get creating! I can't wait to see your amazing ideas.

What makes a good buddy?

At buddy time on Friday Ignite@Midnight and Illuminate thought about what it takes to be an excellent buddy.  Check out the ideas we came up with.  It is great to see that you know about many of the values we have talked about over the year.  Ka pai to mahi!

On Friday for buddy time we are going to choose one of these values and make a poster or video to show how this value should look at buddy time. Do you have any other ideas? Leave us a comment to let us know.

Love by Aroha

We have been writing poems. We chose an emotion and then used our senses to describe it. We then got to choose how we wanted to present it. Aroha chose to make her poem into a poster.
